Creatine kinases and arginine kinases belong to the large family of phosphagen kinases which transfer a phosphoryl group from ATP to a nitrogen atom within a guanidinium group to form a 'phosphagen'. These compounds and the enzymes that catalyse their formation and use are present in cells with rapidly fluctuating energy requirements.
