About the Book
The feudal system has deeply influenced the constitution and society of the Middle Ages. The popular notion of a well-regulated system of rights and obligations between lord and vassal is, however, on closer inspection hardly on strong footing. Therefore, this volume not only provides an introduction to the principles of the feudal system based on central sources, but also provides an impression of how much room was left for individual terms in this general framework. The second edition reflects the current state of debate on the role of feudalism in the Middle Ages. The collection of sources is closely intertwined with the representations and reflects the diversity of feudal relations. Eleven research hypotheses provide insight into the still ongoing discussion about their role and importance in the medieval kingdom. German text.
