Forceful and charismatic, Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed the Presidency in March 1933 during the greatest depression in this country's history. Unemployment skyrocketed, farms were being foreclosed in record numbers, and bank failures were multiplying, but optimism began to re-emerge in the first 100 days of FDR's tenure.
