This publication comprises papers which derive from a special workshop on the topic of "Quaternary sedimentary records in Central Africa and their paleoenvironmental interpretation" held at the 15th INQUA Congress at Durban, South Africa, in 1999. The contributions mainly are covering the Late Quaternary to Holocene climate and environmental history of today's rain forest regions. In addition, some papers deal with the arid regions in southern and northern Africa.
