The hegemony of statist constructions of modern Japan have for long denied the significance of civil society and welfare to the very constitution of Japanese modernity. This book recovers a classical understanding of civil society as the realm of social individuation to draw attention to the specifically modern notion of the subject that underpins both the welfare state and market in contemporary Japan. As such, it offers a critical engagement with debates in comparative political economy and Japanese Studies.
