About the Book
The research is a very interesting and rich ethnography of a residential institution for troublesome girls in Estonia in the late 1990s. Judit Strmpl has collected her data by working as an educator in the K. school participating its daily activities, observing and discussing with and interviewing staff, managers and residents of the institution. The author ambitious aim is to bring a new approach to the Estonian professional and scientific discourse on troublesome children and young people by analysing the system, its everyday operation, ideology, and rhetoric and not the individualised reasons for the problems of young people. This institutional ethnography is also used as a case to analyse Estonian transition-time society. Especially for a foreign reader this makes the book even more interesting and shows the authors cultural sensitivity. Professor Marjo Kuronen, University of Jyvskyl, Finland The descriptions and findings will be of substantial interest to a wide audience. The thesis will make a considerable contribution to the academic literature. Professor Amanda Coffey, Cardiff University, UK.
