About the Book
The story describes a family's average life in the 50's and 60's and the tragedies that strike it. Author Patti Bartlett and her family share a passion for health and fitness and this allowed her to help her one remaining brother, Mark, to remarkably improve his lifestyle by donating her kidney to him. While undergoing a barrage of medical tests Patti kept a journal with the aim of informing potential donors what is involved in being a live kidney donor. Mark's ups and downs after his surgery, which culminated in a successful transplant, were also documented. As a result of much research, further chapters in the book include Living donor long term health, Transplant stories, Donors seek government help, Understanding transplant compatibility and Sign on to save lives. The Transplant Co-ordinator at Westmead Hospital provided valuable feedback and suggestions. Patti's wish is that her story can provide a useful resource and answer some of the many questions involved in considering being a live kidney donor, and also to provide hope to those on dialysis.
