The students for which the book is intended are assumed to have a basic knowledge of chemistry physics and calculus such as they usually gain in their first year at a university. The book is intended primarily for the conventional full-year under- graduate course in physical chemistry. However it covers more than can be included in a one-year course; it may therefore be useful in more advanced courses and as a general reference book for those working in fields that require a basic knowledge of physical chemistry.
