Fire exit signs, arrows, no smoking signs – modern humanity is surrounded by pictograms. As essential elements of a universally understood code, they naturally occupy a central position in any discussion concerning the role of signs in art. As early as 100 years ago artists were seeking to develop an international language which went beyond the written word. This book traces the little-known history of the pictogram from the earliest efforts at universal signage right up to the present day.
