About the Book
On October 1, 2002, the Katholieke Universitet Leuven inaugurated its new library for its Sciences and Engineering campus. This unique occasion was celebrated with an academic session. It was felt, however, that an academic institution should not let such an occasion pass by without organizing a critical reflection on the role of the library for the Sciences in the 21st century.

Contents include: "The delicate balance between centralization and decentralization: the New library structure at Lund University, Sweden," "E-learning and digital libraries: How to link science with information in a networked society," "Who pays the ferryman? About new models for scientific communication," "Fragile, Handle with Care!: the Preservation of Digital Materials," "Firenze University Press: An Italian initiative for electronic publishing," "Scholarly Publishing: Leuven University Press," "Managing challenges of the academic library: Shift the paradigm and put the library on the move," "Knowledge Management: Old news!?," "Quantitative Aspects of the Management of the modern (scientific Library," "Logistics, Physical Organization of a Library, Problems related to New Buildings," "Sleeping with the enemy: Experiments in Wageningen with a model for cohabitation between library and publisher," "Information Provision: the Challenge of developing Countries," "Librarian's! Schizophrenia: Big Deal vs. Open Access," "Today's Libraries: (r)evolutionary yours."
