Rural credit encompasses the range of financial services offered in rural areas by Instiutional and Non-Institutional Agencies to the people of all income levels. In India the institutionalization of rural credit started with the enactment of the first Cooperative Credit Societies Act in 1904. From then cooperative banks served as important providers of financial services but they have often faced greater crises of financial instability. The nationalisation of 14 major commercial banks and the formation of RRBs and NABARD have developed multi-agency approach to rural credit. Now al these Institutional Agencies have covered cent per cent of the Indian villages and significantly contirbuted for White Revolution and Green Revolution.

Dr. K. Ravichandrana got his education at TBML College, Porayar. He has distinguished academic career. He had been a Faculty Member at the institute of Cooperative Management, Kannur, Kerala. Presently he is working as Reader/Coordinator, Diploma in Insurance Business, Department of Cooperation, Gandhigram Rural University, Gandhigram, Dindigul District, Tamilnadu. He has published many papers in the field of banking and management in reputed journals.
Dr. M. Revathi Bala got her Ph.D. in Cooperation at Department of Cooperation, Gandhigram Rural University, Gandhigram and was awarded Tamilnadu Cooperative Union Fellowship for Doctoral studies. She has participated in many seminars and conferences and published papers in reputed journals. Currently she is working as Lecturer in Commerce, at Vysya College, Salem.
