The Commission's report examines the proposed acquisition by Serviced Dispense Equipment Limited (SDEL) of the technical service function of Coors Brewers Limited, in relation to the installation, servicing and replacement of equipment used to dispense draught beer and cider at pub outlets. SDEL is a joint venture company formed through the merger of the technical services businesses of Scottish Courage Ltd and Carlsberg UK Ltd. The Commission concludes that the proposed merger could be expected to result in a substantial lessening of competition within the technical services market, and therefore recommends its prohibition as the appropriate remedy. It also recommends that the Office of Fair Trading should consider undertaking a market investigation into the bundling of prices of supplying technical services with the pricing and supply of beer.
