The subject of ageing has never been more relevant in Africa, where because of a steady reduction in fertility and mortality rates (not withstanding the AIDS pandemic), the population now comprises an increasing percentage of older persons. As the recent governmental 'Act Policy Framework and Plan of Action on Ageing' has surmised, one needs to understand not only the phenomenon of ageing, but the ways in which policies can be adjusted to help improve the quality of life of the ageing population. Madzingira's research here is based on empirical study, and provides a comprehensive analysis of trends and patterns of ageing, including an analysis of perceptions on ageing and the support available to older persons in Zimbabwe. Set out in a clear and accessible way, this work is a must-read for all those involved in decision-making for the care of older people.
