About the Book
The book is the first major attempt t o interpret the process of social disorganisation in the tribal society of Bihar that has been initiated by large scale industrialization in and around Hatia an jamshedpur. It focuses on the belief systems and the behavioural patterns in the tribal society. The loosening of tribal solidarity, the weakening of family and kinship ties, the debility of the traditional mechanism of social control, the appearance of such maladies as beggary and prostitution hitherto unknown in tribal society and the rising tide of juvenile delinquency and criminal propensities have been discussed at length. The book drives home the point that out of this welter a new tribal society is emerging. This is a tribute to the resilience of tribal society in the face of new challenges.
