This is our first book in a series entitled' Angularities of Aids Epidemic in India' HIV/AIDS is undeniably the worst epidemic to confront Civilization till date. By the time manuscript of this book went to the press. National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) announced revised estimates for HIV/AIDS patients in India. The figure went up from 3.95 million to 4.58 million by the end of 2002. The epidemic, which has already acquired dimensions of pandemic in some Parts of the world, is gradually becoming a major political, social and economic challenge to India. The information on HIV/AIDS-biological and social dimensions is not only scanty but is also continuously being revised in the wake of new information pouring in virtually everyday. There are certain facets of the epidemic that are well researched and documented. There are also certain primary tenets of the Disease that we all need to be familiar with. The first volume in the series documents basic information available on the virus and its various modes of transmission. Second section of the book comprises of empirical studies on behavioural aspects and the third section reviews social challenges that require our immediate attention. Our endeavour is to provide basic resource material for all those who want to be prospective partners in the right against the deadly virus.
